In Europe, it appeared already in the Renaissance, as a revival of the culture of ancient Rome. Moderation and order were valued in classical painting. Painting represented clear artistic concepts and perfect drawing, to which color was subordinated. Historical, mythological and contemporary themes were implemented - politically current, the portrait was flourishing. Some topics taken from antiquity were given modern propaganda overtones. The favorite devices used by the artists were: idealization, smoothing the canvas (finis effect), static, symmetrical composition, pathetic gestures of the figures.

Initially painting for the French bourgeoisie during the Great Revolution, satisfying the patriotic and aesthetic needs of society. Then he became the leading painter of Napoleon I, creating academic compositions for the needs of the imperial court and numerous portraits of the ruler.
